John Akpata is a writer, musician, Spoken Word artist and Art Educator based in Ottawa, Canada. John has been performing for over thirteen years, and has emerged into the world scene. He has won poetic competitions such as the 2004 CBC Ottawa Poetry Face Off, he is the first ever Slam Champion for Capital Slam in 2005, and also part of the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word National Slam Championship team of 2010. John's poetry and words were included in the groundbreaking Great Black North Anthology of contemporary African Canadian poetry in 2012. John is also a successful recording artist, having released 5 albums of poetry and music. John's 2013 release Live From Mercury is an unequalled live performance recording of Spoken Word, and world class musicians. John has toured nationally and internationally to perform and showcase his talents. John has taught workshops and plenary lectures across Canada and abroad. John is currently on the Ontario Arts Council roster of educators for Literature, and recently received his Art Educator certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music. John is currently the Director of the Woodroffe Poetry Program at Woodroffe High School in Ottawa. John teaches workshops on poetry writing and performance, and brings students to CHUO 89.1 FM to record their work. One student is selected from the program to be the Poet Laureate for school convocation. John is the host of Monday Night Scribes on CHUO 89.1 FM a 1 hour weekly broadcast dedicated to the art of writing. Each week John has live guests in studio, accompanied by Spoken Word recordings, hip hop, reggae and world music to keep the mind inspired. John is thoroughly dedicated to the upliftment of his community and the betterment of his art form. He has mentored many artists, fostered career development, and has been an advisor to or a major part of many organizations throughout his career. John respects the traditions of the African Griots and takes the responsibility of being a poet to heart.
