Bursting forth from Canada's capital, native Producer/DJ crew A Tribe Called Red is producing a truly unique sound that’s impacting the global electronic scene and urban club culture. Since 2010 the group – made up of two-time Canadian DMC Champion DJ Shub, DJ NDN and DJ Bear Witness – has been mixing traditional pow wow vocals and drumming with cutting-edge electronic music. Their self-titled album, released in March 2012, was long-listed for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize and included in the Washington Post’s top 10 albums of the year.
One of the most celebrated Canadian roots musicians of all time, having sold in excess of 500,000 albums, Ashley has garnered international acclaim by playing the fiddle in that hard-nosed, traditional Cape-Breton style, while adding his own spin, mixing genres and updating Celtic music to appeal to a broader spectrum of fans. Considered something of a local legend and prodigy by the time of his impressive 1992 debut Close To The Floor, Ashley broke through to the mainstream with the double-platinum genre-bending Hi, How Are You Today? in 1995. International radio play for the single, Sleepy Maggie, and a regular slot on MuchMusic made Ashley an instant Canadian icon.
George Leach is an artist in relentless pursuit of truth. His dedication to songcraft is evident throughout his career, nowhere more so than on his latest album, Surrender, out now.
Surrender is the follow up to George’s debut from 2000, Just Where I’m At. The album’s 11 tracks offer ample proof that the time was well spent. From the funky groove of opening track You Got It, to the confident modern rock groove and keening vocal hooks of the first single, Carry Me, to the vulnerability and intimacy in songs like the title track, Surrender takes you on an adventure. The album covers a vast terrain – touches of classic rock, balladry, and R&B, all in the service of a restless musical explorer coming into his own. It ranks among the finest you will encounter, this year or any other.
The energy level of a George Leach show can be described as ‘high’, to put it mildly. In concert George disappears into the moment, chasing the promise of fleeting transcendence that music offers and taking us all with him. Don’t miss it.
The PepTides is Ottawa’s favourite avant-garde pop noir band. The celebrated nine-member group puts on an eclectic spectacle of electro-pop and retro-inspired funk and soul. With songs as deep and dark as they are danceable, the show sizzles with artistry, energy and fun.
River City Junction is a Canadian Blues/Retro-Rock power trio long steeped in the traditional roots of old school Chicago Blues, Motown, and Classic Rock. FEVERS put Ottawa on the indie-electro scene map and continue to with their debut album, 'No Room For Light', released in North America and Europe in late 2013. Produced by Laurence Currie (Wintersleep, Hey Rosetta!, Sloan), it’s an exciting follow-up to the band’s first EP, 'Passion Is Dead' (October 2011).
